Aviation Working Group (By Invitation)

Eno’s Aviation Working Group is a standing advisory group on all matters relating to aviation policy. The group provides Eno staff with insights, knowledge, feedback, and guidance on how to approach some of the most challenging contemporary aviation issues. The goal of the group  is to

(1) educate the public at large as well as policy makers as to the importance of the aviation industry to the U.S. economy;

(2) identify the roadblocks to progress, innovation, and modernization; and

(3) propose bold, pragmatic policy solutions to help tackle those challenges.

The fall meeting will focus on Eno’s current project on UAS Integration. Eno is researching alternatives for certifying and integrating unmanned aerial systems  into the national airspace system and crafting clear and actionable policy recommendations for a path forward.

2020 Transit Senior Executive Program Application

Applications are now closed for the 2020 program. If you want to be the first to know about the 2021 program, join our interest list! 

This 6 day course is an intensive week-long course held in the Washington, DC metro area. All instructors are veteran transit leaders from across the industry. Participants also focus on building individual interpersonal skills in small group settings and role play a real world crisis situation.

HOW TO APPLY  

All required application materials for each applicant must be posted to the Transit Senior Executive Program online application form by the end of the day, Friday, November 15, 2019, for applicants to be eligible to be considered to participate in the 2020 Transit Senior Executive Program. The application form will not be open after this deadline.

Individuals interested in applying for the program must provide the following information:

  1. Online Application
  2. Statement of Interest
  3. Updated Resume
  4. Nomination Letter

Mobility Data Sharing: How Cities are Using New Data for Policy and Planning

With the explosion of shared mobility services across the globe, cities have begun to request and require access to data from private shared fleet operators deploying vehicles within their boundaries. These private companies are amassing large amounts of data on when, where, and how people are traveling. Now, cities are asking for that information to help staff make more informed transportation infrastructure and policy decisions.

How does mobility data-sharing work, and what are the challenges and opportunities for public agencies who want to benefit from the transportation data created by scooter-share, bike-share, car-share, and ride-hail? Join Populus CEO, Regina Clewlow for a webinar providing an overview of the key opportunities and pain points around data-sharing, and examples of how cities are using data for policy and planning.

About the Guest Speaker:

Regina Clewlow

Regina (CEO & Co-founder) is a leading expert on shared mobility, autonomous vehicles, and harnessing big data to simulate the future of regional and global transportation systems. She has served in research and lecturer roles at Stanford, UC Davis, and UC Berkeley. Following her academic career, Regina served as the Director of Business Development & Strategy at moovel, Daimler automotive’s mobility services arm. She has been honored as an MIT Energy Fellow, EPA STAR Fellow, DOT Eisenhower Transportation Fellow, and Mass Transit 40 Under 40. She holds a Ph.D. in transportation and energy systems from MIT, and a B.S. in computer science from Cornell.

 

Webinar: From Yellow to Green: Reducing School Transportation’s Impact on the Environment

The primary goal of every school transportation system is getting students to school safely and on time each day. To do so, America’s fleet of roughly 480,000 school buses drives nearly 3.5 billion miles every year. More than half of students also travel to school in personal vehicles, contributing millions of miles for school transportation.

School transportation is often a necessity for students and families, but daily trips to and from school have significant environmental effects for students and their communities. All of these vehicles emit millions of tons of greenhouse gases per year into the environment — contributing to global warming — and expose children to harmful pollutants that can affect their health and academic performance.

In a new policy brief, “From Yellow to Green: Reducing School Transportation’s Impact on the Environment,” Bellwether Education Partners analyzed how school transportation affects the environment and what steps states and districts can take to provide more environmentally friendly transportation services. This webinar, hosted by the brief’s co-author Phillip Burgoyne-Allen, will provide an overview of the school transportation policy landscape, school transportation’s environmental impact, and the costs and benefits of a number of impact reduction strategies.

Phillip Burgoyne-Allen is a policy analyst at Bellwether Education Partners, a national nonprofit focused on dramatically changing education and life outcomes for underserved children. He has written for WIRED on electric school bus pilot programs. In addition to “From Yellow to Green,” Phillip and the Bellwether team have produced several other resources on school transportation, including “Intersection Ahead: School Transportation, School Integration, and School Choice,” “School Crossing: Student Transportation Safety on the Bus and Beyond,” and “The Challenges and Opportunities in School Transportation Today” in 2019, as well as “Miles to Go: Bringing School Transportation into the 21st Century” and “Better Buses: Three Ways to Improve School Transportation, in Under 3 Minutes” in 2017. Automated vehicles (AVs) could completely transform mobility networks, dramatically improve safety, reduce emissions, and provide access and mobility to underserved parts of society. The proliferation of AVs could also lead to more suburban sprawl, congestion, greenhouse gas emissions, and higher costs. Putting the right public policy in place now will help ensure that the transportation system of the future is safer, equitable, and more efficient. The goal of federal- and state-level governments should be to ensure public safety, to provide a consistent framework for developers, and to create an environment where rules can adapt to unknown future outcomes.  Join the Eno Center for Transportation for a webinar on our report, “Beyond Speculation 2.0: Automated vehicles and Public Policy,” where we’ll review the current state of development for AVs and discuss recommendations for responsibly testing AVs on public roads.
