July 28, 2023 – Over four years after the last efforts to enact legal authorization for self-driving cars went up in smoke, a House subcommittee this week held a hearing to explore new legislation.
The US faces funding challenges for transportation infrastructure due to changing vehicle technology. To address this, a national pilot program for a vehicle miles traveled (VMT) fee is being established. Recommendations include simplicity, scalability, and standardization. Testing will focus on commercial trucks and private passenger vehicles. The goal is to explore alternative funding models and address the transportation funding crisis.
July 12, 2023 – The House Subcommittee on Environment, Manufacturing, and Critical Materials held a markup on July 12 to discuss 3 bills that will have an impact on the electric vehicle transition in the United States.

July 7, 2023 – The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office has released a series of rough projections of how quickly electric vehicles, and electric charging stations, will replace internal combustion vehicles and fossil fueling stations in the U.S.
Data on passenger movements, vehicle fleets, fare payments, and transportation infrastructure has immense potential to inform cities to better plan, regulate, and enforce their urban mobility systems. This report specifically examines the opportunities that exist for U.S. cities to use mobility data—made available through adoption of new mobility services and data-based technologies—to improve transportation’s environmental sustainability, accessibility, and equity.
