February 23, 2017 – The U.S. Department of Transportation last week put a three-month delay on the execution of a deal that would commit $647 million in future Federal Transit Administration discretionary appropriations towards a $2 billion plan to electrify the Caltrain commuter railroad in the San Francisco Bay area.

February 24, 2017 – Recent observations of how humans act behind the wheel of Level 2 autonomous vehicles, such as Tesla’s Autopilot feature, indicate that it is easy to lose focus. Even worse, the current structure is handing the hot potato back to the human in a complex and potentially dangerous situation that they may not be prepared to handle.

February 24, 2017 – This week, the Eno Center for Transportation released Time for Reform: Delivering Modern Air Traffic Control. The report calls for taking air traffic control out of the Federal Aviation Administration in favor of either a government corporation or an independent, non-profit organization. It also proposes a new funding structure that relies on user fees, rather than the current mix of taxes and general funds.

VMT Hits Nominal High, Approaches All-Time Per Capita Mark

February 23, 2017 – The Federal Highway Administration announced this week that in 2016, vehicle miles-traveled on all U.S. roads reached an all-time high of 3.2 trillion, but when divided by the population, the per capita VMT total still lags behind the 2004 peak.
