In recent years there was also a modest increase in the percent of commuters who walk, averaged across all states and the largest cities. City planners and policymakers have begun to consider ways to safely accommodate increasing numbers of vulnerable active transportation road users. Some places have established goals for reaching a designated number of miles of protected bike lane networks, or else implement reduced speed limits within specific areas with the goal of improving safety.
