October 5, 2018 – As USDOT unveiled automated vehicle policy 3.0 and Congress passed the FAA reauthorization, a panel of experts discussed what comes next for automated vehicle policy in the US.
October 5, 2018 – On October 2, the Cato institute hosted transit network design expert Jarrett Walker, of Jarrett Walker + Associates and Cato’s own transportation thinker, Randall O’Toole. The two discussed the past, present, and future of public transportation in the United States, agreeing on many issues such as the importance of freedom of mobility, benefits of private investment, and the disparity between transit needs in urban, suburban, and rural areas.

October 5, 2018 – The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration released the annual estimate of fatalities from highway accidents in the United States for calendar year 2017, showing that fatalities decreased slightly after two years of increases.
October 3, 2018 – The FAA reauthorization directly addresses the agency’s critical role in certification in order to ensure public confidence in the safety of the system for business and leisure travel. With the industry changing rapidly as new technologies come online, the federal certification process needs to be more flexible and agile.
October 3, 2018 – Three months from the Dec. 31 deadline, New Jersey Transit told the Senate Commerce Committee at a hearing yesterday that it is “working diligently” to catch up on installation and qualify for an alternative schedule under the positive train control (PTC) law.

October 4, 2018 – At a public event this morning, Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao released her department’s long-awaited “AV 3.0” guidance document, formally called Preparing for the Future of Transportation: Automated Vehicles 3.0.
October 4, 2018 – On the first day of the new fiscal year, the Federal Highway Administration issued a formal notice apportioning $42.3 billion in highway formula contract authority to state governments.
