Amtrak at 50: Defining the “Basic System” of Service Routes
March 11, 2021 – Over three months in 1970-1971, the Transportation Department and the Nixon White House had to draw up a basic map of route endpoints, which the new quasi-federal passenger railroad (not yet known as Amtrak) would be required to serve. This is how the system map was drawn up.

Biden Meets With Bipartisan House Members on Infrastructure
March 5, 2021 – President Joe Biden hosted an Oval Office meeting yesterday with a bipartisan group of House members to discuss infrastructure legislation, but not only did no plan emerge (to be expected), after the meeting there was no clear sense on whether or not bipartisan legislation would be possible.
Trottenberg Gets Good Reception At Senate Confirmation Hearing
March 5, 2021 – Polly Trottenberg, President Biden’s nominee to serve as Deputy Secretary of Transportation, got a good reception March 3 at her confirmation hearing before the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee.

An Update on the Precarious State of the Aviation Industry
March 5, 2021 – COVID-19 has landed the aviation industry in the largest crisis in its history. With the pandemic still ongoing and passengers levels still significantly down, the Aviation Subcommittee of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee held a hearing entitled “COVID-19’s Effects on U.S. Aviation and the Flight Path to Recovery.”
