Jeff Gonneville’s career trajectory—from driving buses at UMass Transit Services to becoming a senior transit leader—offers valuable insights into how professional development and strategic thinking shape effective leadership in the transportation industry.
Discovering a Lifelong Passion for Transit
Jeff Gonneville’s introduction to public transit began during his student days at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where he worked as a bus operator for UMass Transit Services. What started as a part-time job quickly became a calling. Immersed in an environment of camaraderie and mentorship, Gonneville found inspiration in the collaborative spirit of the transit industry.
“It was more than a job—it was where I caught the transit bug,” he reflects. “I loved the shared sense of purpose and how people in this industry are always willing to help.” This early passion set the stage for a career devoted to advancing public transportation.
Leadership Evolution at MBTA
In 2001, Gonneville joined MBTA as a Senior Technical Project Manager in vehicle engineering, marking the beginning of two decades of service to the agency. Rising through the ranks to Chief Mechanical Officer, Chief Operating Officer, and eventually Deputy General Manager, he gained a reputation for operational excellence and strategic foresight.
It was during his tenure as Chief Mechanical Officer that Gonneville was introduced to Eno’s Transportation Senior Executive (TSE) program by Dr. Beverly Scott, then General Manager of MBTA. Enrolling in the 2015 cohort, he credits the program with fundamentally shifting his leadership style.
“The TSE program challenged me to think strategically and to balance day-to-day operations with a long-term vision,” Gonneville explains. Soon after completing the program, he took on broader responsibilities, leading MBTA through critical challenges with renewed focus and insight.
A Transformative TSE Experience
The TSE program was a defining moment in Gonneville’s career, offering both personal and professional insights. A 360-degree assessment revealed a tendency to micromanage, prompting him to adjust his leadership approach.
Through executive coaching, he learned to set clear expectations and grant his team the autonomy to execute. “TSE helped me embrace a big-picture perspective while building trust within my team,” he recalls. This mindset shift allowed him to navigate complex challenges with greater confidence.
Additionally, sessions on stakeholder relationships left a lasting impact. Guided by former Eno board member Jerry Premo, Gonneville gained tools to foster trust and communication with diverse groups, including board members and union representatives.
Advice for Future Leaders
Reflecting on his journey, Gonneville emphasizes the importance of prioritizing professional development. “Take the time to invest in yourself and your growth,” he advises. “Learn from others, ask hard questions, and take every opportunity to expand your perspective.”
His TSE experience not only redefined his leadership approach but also solidified a network of peers and mentors that continues to support him.
