Letter from the Guest Editor: Eno Board Chair Diane Woodend Jones

In this special edition of Eno Transportation Weekly, we present an array of perspectives from women who are shaping the present and the future of transportation, voices grounded in experience, sharpened by responsibility, and focused on the public good.

It is a tremendous honor to serve as editor of this collection of articles written by these astute thought leaders during Women’s History Month. Their voices represent clarity of leadership and vision, and promote innovation that will help optimize transportation systems to better serve our communities. In addition to their broad-reaching contributions to advancing transportation, women’s perspectives and leadership are essential to appropriately represent the female users of transportation; who comprise half the population yet are often underrepresented in industry conversations.

The authors featured in this issue bring a breadth of insight that mirrors the complexity of the transportation field. The articles span topics from rethinking outdated frameworks, and navigating reauthorization opportunities to mentoring the next generation of leaders and advancing more holistic measures of success. They highlight tangible achievements, whether that is crafting narrative frameworks that help communities and elected officials better understand the value of infrastructure, building strategic campaigns that advance policy and funding, or implementing programs that modernize and strengthen the systems people rely on every day.

A common theme in these articles is progress and recognition of how far the transportation field has come in expanding the number of women in leadership roles. Several authors reflect not only on these achievements but also on the work that remains, emphasizing the importance of ensuring that pathways to leadership remain open, visible, and attainable for those who follow.

The diversity of perspectives is reflected in discussions on emerging technologies. One author explores the transformative potential of artificial intelligence, while another offers a necessary caution about overreliance on emerging technologies. Taken together, the articles demonstrate the kind of innovative, rigorous, multidimensional thinking that leads to better outcomes.

The role of women in transportation is both significant and increasing. These articles serve as a valuable resource for advancing the conversation and expanding the possibilities for meaningful progress.
