Pedestrian and Bicyclist Fatalities Reach Twenty-Year Highs in 2018

October 25, 2019 – This week, NHTSA released data showing that while vehicle-related deaths have dropped, pedestrian and bicyclist deaths have soared to their highest point in over two decades by 3.4% and 6.3%, respectively.

Senate Debates FY20 DOT Appropriations: Highway Rescission Fix Offered

October 25, 2019 – This week, the U.S. Senate took up a $209 billion package of four appropriations bills for fiscal year 2020, including the Transportation-HUD appropriations bill. Passage of the bill could be possible next week but is contingent on bipartisan, behind-the-scenes negotiations on which amendments will get votes and which amendments won’t get votes.

Transportation Workforce Crisis: Denver Cuts Transit Service Due to Staff Shortages

October 25, 2019 – A recent story out of Denver shows that the regional transportation agency is being forced to scale back their transit service due to a lack of drivers and maintenance personnel. While the reduction in service is relatively minor it does highlight the impacts of a tight labor market on transportation. The agency has resources to hire 60 rail operators and 80 bus drivers, but those jobs remain unfilled.
