Bikes in parks: GearJunkie reported on a proposed new federal rule to allow e-bikes on park roads currently only open for motor vehicle use.

Roads and bridges: On September 15, USDOT announced a $2.5 billion TIFIA loan for the Interstate 10 Mobile River Bridge and Bayway Project, billed as the largest infrastructure project in Alabama history.

Traffic safety: On September 15, New York City’s mayor announced a plan, Vision Zero Reimagined, designed to reduce traffic deaths and serious injuries.   The plan outlines more than 100 policies to prevent deaths and serious injuries, including redesigning the city’s most dangerous, untreated streets and new legal tools to hold dangerous drivers accountable. The city’s Vision Zero initiative, first announced in 2014,  is credited with significantly reducing the number of traffic deaths. According to New York City DOT, there were fewer traffic death in 2025 than any year since the city began recording them in 1910.

Aviation safety: A September 16 New York Times article explored the safety risks inherent in Los Angeles helicopter traffic, as evidenced by a September 15 crash of a TV news helicopter in Chatsworth: “The L.A. Helicopter Crash Highlights a Sky Full of Hazards”. (Ed. Note: Chatsworth was also the location of the 2008 UP-Metrolink train crash that prompted Congress to pass the Positive Train Control safety mandate.)

Amtrak/freight rail: On September 16, Amtrak announced that it had reached agreement with Canadian National on an eight-year operating agreement covering several Amtrak passenger services. The agreement ends a decade-old proceeding before the Surface Transportation Board, aligns performance payments with FRA on-time standards, and adds grade-crossing detection technology to Amtrak trains on CN’s network. 

Amtrak/transit: On September 17, Amtrak and New Jersey Transit announced their plans for a 50 percent reduction in mass transit operations during the five-weeks it will take to complete cutover of the Portal North Bridge.

Ports/cybersecurity: On September 17, Bloomberg news reported that the Port of Los Angeles had foiled 120 million cyberattacks in August alone.
