Senate Confirms Pre-Recess Nominee Package, 51-47

The U.S. Senate today confirmed a large en bloc package of Trump Administration nominees with a single vote of 51 to 47, clearing much of the Executive Calendar prior to embarking on a month-long summer recess.

The four transportation-related nominees confirmed today were:

  • Calendar No. 866, Edward Eppler to be Chief Financial Officer, U.S. Department of Transportation;
  • Calendar No. 868, Thomas Chapman to be re-appointed to a seat on the National Transportation Safety Board;
  • Calendar No. 869, Karen Hedlund to be re-appointed to a seat on the Surface Transportation Board, and
  • Calendar No, 870, David Cummins to be Administrator of the Transportation Security Administration for five years.

Chapman’s re-appointment means that the NTSB is still at four confirmed Board members, as we await a replacement for Todd Inman. The same goes for Hedlund at the STB, which will still only have four confirmed members.

As of now, there are no pending transportation-nominations that have been submitted to the Senate.

Senior vacancies at USDOT for which the White House has yet to nominate anyone include:

  • Assistant Secretary for Transportation Policy
  • Assistant Secretary for Governmental Affairs
  • Administrator, Federal Transit Administration
  • Inspector General
