On behalf of the entire Eno team, I want to join the transportation community in remembering Dr. Hani Mahmassani, who passed away on July 15, 2025, after a remarkable life and an extraordinary career in transportation.
Dr. Mahmassani held prominent academic positions throughout his career, including professorships at the University of Texas at Austin and the University of Maryland, and he has spent the last nearly two decades serving at Northwestern University. He was Director of the Northwestern University Transportation Center and a professor of civil and environmental engineering, as well as the William A. Patterson Distinguished Chair in Transportation. Eno was fortunate to have Dr. Mahmassani join our Board of Advisors in 2018 where he generously shared his time and expertise forwarding our mission and enhancing our impact.
Described by Northwestern’s Dean of Engineering, Christopher Schuh, as “a visionary scholar whose impact extended far beyond the classroom,” Dr. Mahmassani was internationally recognized for his expertise in multimodal transportation systems, dynamic network modeling and optimization, transit planning and design, telematics, and real-time logistics operations. His research spanned complex topics and large-scale systems, but his greatest strength may have been his ability to build bridges – linking disciplines, institutions, and people to expand the reach and impact of his work.
Beyond his many accomplishments, Dr. Mahmassani was a deeply committed educator who mentored generations of transportation professionals. His legacy is reflected not only in his research but in the many students he mentored throughout his career – a calling that resonates deeply with all of us at Eno. We were honored to have his involvement in our work, and we look forward to continuing to learn from the leaders he helped shape.
