SUMMARY:Webinar: How Disruptions to Our Transportation System Can Impact Food Supply
DESCRIPTION:Immediate concerns about the ability of the food supply chain to meet customer demand have abated following the initial wave of panic buying\, but concerns remain for the coming year. As the reported cases among meat packers and food processers have highlighted\, one concern that will stay with us and probably increase as society reopens is the availability of workers\, from the farm through processing to the grocery store or restaurant. Transportation is the vital link between all these segments. This webinar will focus on how disruptions to transportation\, particularly within the trucking labor force\, could rise to an industry-level problem. \nSpeakers:\nAndrew Novakovic\, Ph.D.\, Professor of Agricultural Economics\, Director of Land Grant Programs; Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management at Cornell University \nRomic Aevaz\, Policy Analyst\, Eno Center for Transportation \n\nAndrew Novakovic is a professor of agricultural economics at Cornell University and director of Land Grant Programs for the Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management. His research focuses on the economics of agricultural and food product markets\, particularly dairy foods. This includes the economics of food distribution\, the operation of food processing and marketing\, and the regulation of the United States’ food supply. \nWatch the Recording:

SUMMARY:Webinar: The Adoption and Travel Impacts of Teleworking: Will It Be Different This Time?
DESCRIPTION:From Alvin Toffler’s (1980) “electronic cottage\,” to Peter Drucker’s (1993) declaration that commuting to an office was obsolete\, through countless disruptions ever since\, people have predicted the widespread adoption of working from home\, with concomitant benefits to congestion\, fuel consumption\, and emissions.  Yet while telecommuting has seen steady growth in the “information era\,” overall levels have remained modest—until recently\, when the COVID-19 pandemic has forced its adoption on an unprecedented scale.  What will happen when it is safe to go back to the office?  Will managers and staff alike embrace the benefits of working from home\, or will it be back to business as usual? This webinar offers a snapshot of the present\, reviews past research and experience on the adoption and travel-related impacts of telecommuting and reflects on future implications for transportation. \nSpeakers:\nPatricia Mokhtarian\, Ph.D.\, Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering\, Georgia Institute of Technology\nAlice Grossman\, Ph.D.\, Senior Policy Analyst\, Eno Center for Transportation \n\nPatricia Mokhtarian is the Susan G. and Christopher D. SUMMARY:Webinar: Dynamic Streets\, Curbs\, and Sidewalks in COVID-19
DESCRIPTION:Previous plans to expand bike networks and more space for pedestrians are being fast-tracked as stay-at-home orders for COVID-19 demand more room for people to adequately practice social distancing while remaining active and making trips for essential goods and services. As cities move quickly\, it is important for them to have tools to rapidly create these new policies and communicate them easily to mobility operators and the public. Cities across the world\, from Oakland to Denver to Milan to Paris\, are moving to free up more space for pedestrians and cyclists\, often by accelerating existing plans. This webinar will discuss how cities are taking action and how new digital tools can support more dynamic management of their streets\, curbs\, and sidewalks. \nSpeakers:\nRodney Stiles\, Head of Policy\, Populus\nPaul Lewis\, Vice President of Policy and Finance\, Eno Center for Transportation \n\nAs the Head of Policy at Populus\, Rodney leads development of the team’s policy agenda\, communications\, and relationships with cities around the world. LA County Metro recently released a report\, “Understanding How Women Travel\,” in a first-of-its-kind effort to answer this question. Developing from Metro’s Women and Girls Governing Council\, this study aimed to collect data and offer findings that can help improve women’s safety and comfort on transit and attract and retain women to the Metro system. To ensure a comprehensive approach that captured the diverse needs and experiences of women in LA County\, the project team deployed an innovative\, mixed-methods approach to capture quantitative data as well as qualitative data from hard-to-reach rider populations including women experiencing homelessness\, women immigrants\, and women with disabilities. In this webinar\, panelists will discuss the origin of the project\, the methods used\, and the key findings from the study. \nSpeakers:\nChelsea Richer\, Associate\, Fehr & Peers\nClaudia Galicia\, Senior Manager\, Transportation Planning at LA Metro\nMeghna Khanna\, Senior Director\, Countywide Planning & Development at LA Metro\nAlice Grossman\, Policy Analyst\, Eno Center for Transportation\n \n\nWatch the Recording:\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Webinar: Mobility as a Service: How to Share and Play Nice
DESCRIPTION:Mobility as a Service (MaaS) has been a buzzing topic over the past few years. Interest in this movement has grown out of consumers and transportation providers recognizing that travel needs may not be met optimally by a single mode or service. The emerging set of private and public entities offering MaaS platforms show early signs of two very different approaches: walled gardens vs. open ecosystems. Landon Reed will introduce some of the competing interests driving these approaches\, how some agencies have responded to proliferating mobility services\, and share some of the work IBI Group has done in the space. \nSpeakers:\nLandon Reed\, Transit Data Specialist\, IBI Group\nAlice Grossman\, PhD\, Senior Policy Analyst\, Eno Center for Transportation \n\nWatch the Recording:

SUMMARY:Webinar: Contracting for Mobility
DESCRIPTION:New privately-run mobility services are now ubiquitous in many urban regions. While these services are private ventures\, companies and public entities can partner to deliver services that augment or enhance public transit. Of course\, public transportation agencies contracting with private entities for services is not a new concept. Agencies routinely form agreements for services\, ranging from information technology to station cleaning to bus and paratransit operations. Lessons and best practices for those traditional agreements abound. \nWhat is different with the new mobility on-demand (MOD) services is that they are often run by startup companies with different business models and expectations. Public agencies and MOD companies alike have limited experience contracting on these types of services.  In this webinar\, we will review Eno’s recent case study on the contracts for the MOD Sandbox pilot projects in the Los Angeles and Puget Sound regions. We will discuss the nuances of interactions between private companies and public agencies\, including non-disclosure agreements and data sharing\, and provide recommendations for how the contracting process can be improved to ensure better project outcomes. \nSpeakers:\nAlice Grossman\, Senior Policy Analyst\, Eno Center for Transportation\nPaul Lewis\, Vice President of Policy and Finance\, Eno Center for Transportation \n\nWatch the Recording:

SUMMARY:Webinar: Analyzing Bus Ridership Decline
DESCRIPTION:Following six years of consecutive decline\, bus ridership in the United States attained its lowest level ever recorded in history last year. In this webinar\, Dr. Berrebi will explain reasons and potential solutions to this decline through analysis of passenger count data between 2012 and 2018 at 50\,000 bus stops in four cities: Portland\, Miami\, Minneapolis/St. Paul\, and Atlanta. Data show that in all four cities\, neighborhoods with high proportions of white residents lost ridership at the fastest rate. In Miami and Atlanta\, places with high concentrations of college-graduates also correlate with ridership decline. These results suggest that changes in the travel behavior of choice riders may explain the bulk of the decline. Dr. Berrebi will discuss the inelasticity between frequency and ridership and recommend service\, policy\, and infrastructure solutions for transit agencies. \nSpeakers:\nSimon Berrebi\, PhD\, Postdoctoral Fellow at the Georgia Institute of Technology\nAlice Grossman\, PhD\, Senior Policy Analyst\, Eno Center for Transportation \n\nDr. Simon Berrebi is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Georgia Institute of Technology\, where he conducts research on transit ridership. During his Ph.D.\, Simon developed a real-time dispatching method to avoid bus-bunching\, which was implemented on three high-frequency transit routes in Atlanta\, GA\, and San Antonio\, TX. He founded DynamicTime\, and software company helping transit agencies implement dynamic tools to improve operations. Simon is also the founder and past executive director of MARTA Army\, an Atlanta-based non-profit empowering 400 volunteers to improve transit amenities in their own neighborhoods. \nDownload the Slides\nWatch the Recording:

SUMMARY:Webinar: Reforming America's Transportation System
DESCRIPTION:Transportation governance is a growing issue for modern transportation. State departments of transportation\, transit agencies\, metropolitan planning organizations\, and federal administrations are among many of the institutions that are tasked with building and managing the complex intermodal transportation that supports the U.S. economy. But can today’s transportation governance structures\, funding arrangements\, decision-making mechanisms\, and operating practices respond to the disruptive changes that surround them? What reforms could improve safety\, efficiency\, and equity? In February 2019\, Eno\, along with the Reason Foundation\, convened a 3-day workshop to begin the exploration of transportation governance. The webinar will cover the results of this forum\, key issues identified by participants\, and next steps for further discussion. \nSpeakers: \nMartin Wachs\, PhD\, Professor Emeritus of Civil and Environmental Engineering and City and Regional Planning\, University of California\, Berkeley\nEmil Frankel\, Senior Fellow\, Eno Center for Transportation\nAlice Grossman\, PhD\, Senior Policy Analyst\, Eno Center for Transportation \n\nWatch the Recording:\n \nOn YouTube
