SUMMARY:Road to Recovery Webinar: More Than Meets the Eye: Density and Transportation During COVID-19
DESCRIPTION:The impacts of density on the COVID-19 pandemic are currently the center of attention in public opinion\, policy decisions\, and planning practice. The concerns and assumptions surrounding density challenge the foundation of modern cities and have immediate implications for transportation expenditures\, urban redevelopment\, tax policy\, congestion pricing\, smart growth\, and affordable housing. However\, a recent study titled “Does Density Aggravate the COVID-19 Pandemic” suggests quite the opposite. The authors found that density is not linked to rates of COVID-19 infections and that COVID-19 death rates are lower in denser countries and higher in less dense ones. In this webinar\, we will discuss the study’s findings on density and COVID-19 and their implications for transportation\, urban planning\, and more. \nSpeakers:\nShima Hamidi\, Bloomberg Assistant Professor of American Health\, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health\nReid Ewing\, Professor of City and Metropolitan Planning\, University of Utah\nSadegh Sabouri\, Ph.D. Research Assistant\, University of Utah\nRobert Puentes\, President and CEO\, Eno Center for Transportation  \nDownload the Slides \nWatch the Recording:

SUMMARY:Road to Recovery Webinar: The Federal Role in Transit's COVID Recovery
DESCRIPTION:Public transportation has been hit particularly hard by the COVID-19 pandemic. The stay at home orders have dramatically reduced ridership\, fares\, and tax revenues\, while the ongoing health concerns about the virus make a return to normal timeline far from certain. Meanwhile\, public transportation has demonstrated its value as an essential service during the pandemic\, and it will remain essential for an economic recovery. The federal government has recognized this\, providing $25B in emergency funding in the CARES Act that for the first time included flexibility to spend on operations. As we transition from pandemic response to recovery\, what role will the federal government play in keeping public transportation moving? This webinar will dive into the question: What does federal policy look like in a recovery for transit? \nSpeakers:\nRobert Puentes\, President and CEO\, Eno Center for Transportation\nChristopher Pangilinan\, Head of Global Policy\, Public Transportation\, Uber\nGrace Crunican\, Former General Manager\, BART\nDarnell Grisby\, Director of Policy Development and Research\, APTA \n\nWatch the Recording:\n \n\n

SUMMARY:Webinar: Congestion Pricing in the United States
DESCRIPTION:This webinar summarizes Eno’s latest research report titled Congestion Pricing in the United States: Principles for Developing a Viable Program to Advance Sustainability and Equity Goals. \nThere is no silver bullet to fix the woes of urban mobility and access\, but congestion pricing is a proven\, viable\, and effective tool. Charging a fee for the parts of the roadway network used the most during the busiest times of day reduces demand. The charges incentivize travelers to switch to other modes of transportation\, seek alternative routes\, or travel at other times. The charges can help to reduce negative effects of traffic such as air pollution\, carbon emissions\, road damage\, and traffic crashes. This webinar will outline Eno’s latest research report discussing how to address the most significant barriers to congestion pricing today: the political\, institutional\, and communication hurdles. \nSpeakers:\nBrianne Eby\, Senior Policy Analyst\, Eno Center for Transportation\nRobert Puentes\, President and CEO\, Eno Center for Transportation\nMartha Roskowski\, Principal\, Further Strategies \nDownload the Slides \nWatch the Recording:

SUMMARY:Webinar: How Disruptions to Our Transportation System Can Impact Food Supply
DESCRIPTION:Immediate concerns about the ability of the food supply chain to meet customer demand have abated following the initial wave of panic buying\, but concerns remain for the coming year. As the reported cases among meat packers and food processers have highlighted\, one concern that will stay with us and probably increase as society reopens is the availability of workers\, from the farm through processing to the grocery store or restaurant. Transportation is the vital link between all these segments. This webinar will focus on how disruptions to transportation\, particularly within the trucking labor force\, could rise to an industry-level problem. \nSpeakers:\nAndrew Novakovic\, Ph.D.\, Professor of Agricultural Economics\, Director of Land Grant Programs; Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management at Cornell University \nRomic Aevaz\, Policy Analyst\, Eno Center for Transportation \n\nAndrew Novakovic is a professor of agricultural economics at Cornell University and director of Land Grant Programs for the Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management. His research focuses on the economics of agricultural and food product markets\, particularly dairy foods. This includes the economics of food distribution\, the operation of food processing and marketing\, and the regulation of the United States’ food supply. \nWatch the Recording:

SUMMARY:Webinar: The Adoption and Travel Impacts of Teleworking: Will It Be Different This Time?
DESCRIPTION:From Alvin Toffler’s (1980) “electronic cottage\,” to Peter Drucker’s (1993) declaration that commuting to an office was obsolete\, through countless disruptions ever since\, people have predicted the widespread adoption of working from home\, with concomitant benefits to congestion\, fuel consumption\, and emissions.  Yet while telecommuting has seen steady growth in the “information era\,” overall levels have remained modest—until recently\, when the COVID-19 pandemic has forced its adoption on an unprecedented scale.  What will happen when it is safe to go back to the office?  Will managers and staff alike embrace the benefits of working from home\, or will it be back to business as usual? This webinar offers a snapshot of the present\, reviews past research and experience on the adoption and travel-related impacts of telecommuting and reflects on future implications for transportation. \nSpeakers:\nPatricia Mokhtarian\, Ph.D.\, Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering\, Georgia Institute of Technology\nAlice Grossman\, Ph.D.\, Senior Policy Analyst\, Eno Center for Transportation \n\nPatricia Mokhtarian is the Susan G. and Christopher D. In Sweden\, dynamic environmental zones that are triggered by thresholds in air pollution or digitally-enforced speed regulations outside schools are currently be tested. To a large extent\, the technology is already available and the Swedish Transport Administration is working together with the city of Gothenburg and Stockholm to develop the ability to deliver traffic rules and regulations digitally to connected vehicles through a national road database. This webinar will discuss current and future applications of geofencing technology and what capabilities that will be needed from transport authorities in order to make full use of its potential. \nSpeakers:\nJohannes Berg\, Senior Adviser for Digitalization of the Transport System\, Swedish Transport Administration\nAlice Grossman\, Ph.D.\, Senior Policy Analyst\, Eno Center for Transportation \n\nJohannes Berg is Program Manager for a four-year R&D platform on geofencing at the Swedish Transport Administration. The platform gathers key actors from the public sector\, car industry\, tech industry\, and academia with the aim of promoting a full-scale implementation of geofencing in Sweden and the Nordic countries. Johannes previously served as Project Manager for Smart City projects in the city of Stockholm and as a Senior Adviser at the ministry of enterprises expert authority Transport Analysis\, where he initiated the first Swedish simulations studies on the impacts of autonomous vehicles. \nWatch the Recording:

SUMMARY:Webinar: Dynamic Streets\, Curbs\, and Sidewalks in COVID-19
DESCRIPTION:Previous plans to expand bike networks and more space for pedestrians are being fast-tracked as stay-at-home orders for COVID-19 demand more room for people to adequately practice social distancing while remaining active and making trips for essential goods and services. As cities move quickly\, it is important for them to have tools to rapidly create these new policies and communicate them easily to mobility operators and the public. Cities across the world\, from Oakland to Denver to Milan to Paris\, are moving to free up more space for pedestrians and cyclists\, often by accelerating existing plans. This webinar will discuss how cities are taking action and how new digital tools can support more dynamic management of their streets\, curbs\, and sidewalks. \nSpeakers:\nRodney Stiles\, Head of Policy\, Populus\nPaul Lewis\, Vice President of Policy and Finance\, Eno Center for Transportation \n\nAs the Head of Policy at Populus\, Rodney leads development of the team’s policy agenda\, communications\, and relationships with cities around the world. Previously\, he worked at the New York Taxi and Limousine Commission where he led taxi and ride-hail policy and data reporting. He also worked as a demographer for the New York City Department of Planning\, developing solutions to help the city plan for its future. His interests include walking\, biking\, and data visualization. He is a 2009 graduate of the Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy at Rutgers University. \nDownload the Slides \nWatch the Recording:

SUMMARY:Webinar: There's No Tool Like Curbs: The Powerful Mobility Tool Every City Already Has
DESCRIPTION:Cities are looking to their transportation systems to promote mobility\, safety\, equity\, climate and accessibility goals. Some trends\, such as the growth in e-commerce and ride-hailing\, are making these achieving these goals more complex. Cities can be stymied\, sometimes by other levels of government\, in efforts to combat congestion. But cities typically exercise significant control over their streets\, sidewalks and curb space. Curb space management policy is a powerful tool cities already have\, which\, if leveraged strategically\, can be a powerful tool to reach mobility goals. This webinar will discuss the ways cities can develop policies for valuable curb space to drive their larger objectives. \nSpeakers:\nDawn Miller\, Head of Policy and Partnerships\, COORD\nBrianne Eby\, Senior Policy Analyst\, Eno Center for Transportation \n\nDawn Miller is Coord’s Head of Policy and Partnerships. She previously served as Chief of Staff at the New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC)\, the City agency that oversees New York City’s taxi\, car service and ride-hailing industries. Dawn launched TLC’s Research and Evaluation practice\, serving as its first director\, and worked as a researcher at the Urban Institute in Washington\, DC. She lives with her husband and son in Brooklyn and loves parks\, bikes\, beaches\, stoop-sitting and group fitness. \nDownload the Slides \nWatch the Recording:
