SUMMARY:Asset Recycling Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Speakers: \nThe Honorable Joe Hockey\, Australian Ambassador to the United States of America\nJennifer Aument\, Group General Manager – North America\, Transurban\nRobert Puentes\, President and CEO\, Eno Center for Transportation \nAmerica’s struggle to build and renew its roads\, airports\, water treatment facilities\, public buildings\, and other infrastructure projects is old news. There is a constant drumbeat of news reports discussing our dilapidated bridges\, inability to raise the federal gas tax\, and the United States’ declining global competitiveness. Solutions and success stories\, however\, are rarely part of the discussion. One important example of a possible way to address some of our infrastructure woes is a strategy known as asset recycling. \nAsset recycling is a system in which governments lease existing infrastructure to private entities. The fees generated from the lease are then used to invest in other infrastructure projects. \nThe most prominent example of where this tool has been used is in Australia. Between 2015 and 2017\, that country’s Asset Recycling Initiative (ARI) helped finalize agreements with its states and territories worth nearly $3billion. These funds are have unlocked over $17 billion in infrastructure spending. \nAt 10am ET on August 29\, 2017\, Eno is honored to host Australian Ambassador Joe Hockey and Jennifer Aument from Transurban for a webinar discussion on asset recycling in Australia and its potential here in the United States. \nRegister \nAbout Ambassador Joe Hockey \nThe Honourable Joe Hockey is Australia’s Ambassador to the United States of America\, taking up his posting in Washington in January 2016. \nMr Hockey has had a long and distinguished career in public service. He first entered Parliament in 1996 as the Member for North Sydney and spent more than seventeen years on the front bench. \nMr Hockey served as a Minister in a number of different portfolios including Financial Services\, Small Business and Tourism\, Human Services and Employment and Workplace Relations. \nIn 2013 Mr Hockey was appointed Treasurer of the Commonwealth and was responsible for all economic policy including fiscal policy. He served as Chair of the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors in 2014 and a member of the leadership troika in 2015. As Treasurer he was a regular delegate to IMF\, World Bank\, Asian Development Bank and APEC meetings. \nPreviously Mr Hockey served as a banking and finance lawyer with a major Australian law firm. He graduated from the University of Sydney with Bachelor degrees in Arts and Law. \nMr Hockey is married to Ms Melissa Babbage\, a company director and former investment banker. They have three young children Xavier\, Adelaide and Ignatius. \nAbout Transurban \nTransurban manages and develops urban toll road networks in the United States and Australia. Transurban partners with governments to meet the long-term transportation needs of communities – developing sustainable\, safe\, innovative and efficient projects.  Transurban financed\, operates and maintains the 495 and 95 Express Lanes\, serving 3.5 million customers.  Under an agreement with VDOT\, Transurban will deliver and operate the 395 Express Lanes project. \nAbout Eno \nThe Eno Center for Transportation is an independent\, nonpartisan think tank that promotes policy innovation and leads professional development in the transportation industry. As part of its mission\, Eno seeks continuous improvement in transportation and its public and private leadership in order to improve the system’s mobility\, safety\, and sustainability.

SUMMARY:Miles to Go: Bringing School Transportation into the 21st Century
DESCRIPTION:Every day\, nearly 25 million students travel to school in an instantly recognizable yellow bus. Since these vehicles drove onto the scene decades ago\, almost nothing has changed about them or the school systems that use them to transport students. \nWhile the school bus is the safest vehicle on the road\, these days many school districts are struggling to provide efficient and adequate service because of rising costs\, stagnant funding\, and increasingly complex regulations. \nIn a recent report\, Bellwether Education Partners analyzed school transportation on a national scale to determine how schools can improve their transportation systems while maintaining their impeccable safety record. This webinar\, hosted by report co-author Jennifer O’Neal Schiess\, will focus on the planning\, efficiency\, and regulation of school transportation. \nSpeakers:\nRobert Puentes\, President and CEO\, Eno Center for Transportation\nJennifer O’Neal Schiess\, Principal\, Bellwether Education Partners

SUMMARY:Safer\, Faster\, Cheaper: Aviation Certification for the 21st Century
DESCRIPTION:Speakers:\nRobert Puentes\nRui Neiva \n\nOverview: \nThe United States has the safest airspace in the world. Maintaining that level of safety means ensuring that all civil aviation products and articles meet rigorous standards. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) sets these standards and is responsible for overseeing these processes. The high level of safety that the U.S. aviation industry enjoys today is due to the careful and precise certification processes that the FAA maintains. \nHowever\, with rapid pace of change in the aviation industry\, we run the risk of allowing these safety standards to slip\, endangering thousands of lives. Key industry stakeholders have already raised concerns about the efficiency and functionality of the FAA’s certification and approval processes. \nIn order to ensure the continued safety and viability of the U.S. aviation industry reform is needed. The FAA needs to adapt to new technologies while also simultaneously maintaining high standards for safety at a time when government resources are scarce and demand from the industry is high. \nEno’s latest report highlights the issues with the current certification procedures and recommends key policy reforms. It focused on three specific areas: \n\nAviation products and their components\nAir traffic control and air traffic controllers\nRepair stations\n\n

SUMMARY:Scenario Planning Resources: New Approaches to Support the Next Generation of Scenario Planning in Transportation
DESCRIPTION:June 14\, 2017\n 1:30-3:00pm EST \nFHWA and the Eno Center for Transportation Present:\nScenario Planning Resources: New Approaches to Support the Next Generation of Scenario Planning in Transportation – A Webinar    \n\nCommunities constantly evolve and change in response to social\, political\, economic\, technological and environmental forces. Effectively planning for this change in transportation requires the cultivation of a participatory and informed decision-making process that regularly considers what is likely to happen\, what could happen and what the community wants to happen in the future. Scenario planning provides a framework to do just this – it is way to consider the issues and opportunities of different futures and plan accordingly. \nWhile Scenario Planning is probably best known as a process for engaging the public\, stakeholders and elected officials in tradeoff discussions about different desired or aspirational futures\, it is also increasingly becoming a valuable technique to help plan in the face of uncertainty or consider emerging trends. This webinar will highlight the key chapters of the new publication from FHWA entitled “The Next Generation of Scenario Planning – A Transportation Practitioner’s Guidebook” as well summarize the findings of a synthesis report from the National Association of Regional Council’s (NARC) that surveyed 24 regional entities on their use of scenario planning. Finally\, the webinar will also include a plenary discussion with key speakers to highlight some of the driving trends and issues facing MPOs and DOTs for which a scenario-based planning approach could be beneficial. \nWebinar Agenda \n\nWhy Scenario Planning?\nNext Generation Scenario Planning – A Practitioner’s Guide\nRegional Use of Scenario Planning\nPlenary Discussion – Emerging Issues in Transportation & How Scenario Planning Can Be An Effective Tool\n\nWebinar Speakers: \nRobert Puentes\, Eno Center for Transportation\nKen Petty\, Federal Highway Administration\nKatharine Ange\, Renaissance Planning Group\nErich Zimmerman\, National Association of Regional Councils (NARC) \n

SUMMARY:25th Annual Future Leaders Development Conference Dinner
DESCRIPTION:On June 8\, 2017 the Eno Center will hold its 25th annual Future Leaders Development Conference Dinner in Washington DC. The dinner is the culmination of Eno’s Future Leaders Development Conference (LDC). The conference gives 20 of the nation’s top graduate students in transportation a first-hand look at how national transportation policies are developed. Students apply to the program early in the year\, and those selected as “Eno Fellows” come to DC for a week of meetings with federal officials and leaders of business and non-profit organizations. \nThis year the Eno Center for Transportation will honor Jane Garvey – former Federal Aviation Administration Administrator and Deputy Administrator of the Federal Highway Administration – with a Lifetime Achievement Award and Robert Prince – former Vice President of AECOM with the Wilbur S. Smith Friend of Eno Award. \nJane Garvey is currently the North American Chairman of Meridiam Infrastructure. She has held a variety of senior positions in both the public and private infrastructure sectors. Most recently\, she served on the Transition Team for President Barack Obama where she focused on transportation policies and related challenges facing the new administration. Prior to that\, Ms. Garvey served as the 14th Administrator of the Federal Aviation Administration and also served as the Acting Administrator and Deputy Administrator of the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). \nRobert Prince is currently with Gannon Consult and is the retired Vice President of Transit at AECOM. SUMMARY:Air Traffic Control for the 21st Century
DESCRIPTION:Join the Eno Center for Transportation for an event on air traffic control reform. The event will be hosted by Eno President and CEO\, Robert Puentes along with aviation expert Rui Neiva. \nThe event is centered around Eno’s newest report – Time for Reform: Delivering Modern Air Traffic Control. The report calls for taking air traffic control out of the Federal Aviation Administration in favor of either a government corporation or an independent\, non-profit organization. It also proposes a new funding structure that relies on user fees\, rather than the current mix of taxes and general funds. \nAfter 30 years of attempted reforms\, there is now an opportunity to move forward and reform ATC into a system more ready to tackle the challenges of the future. \nRegister

SUMMARY:Understanding the Travel Trends of Teens and Young Adults
DESCRIPTION:Driving has been flat or declining for much of the 2000s\, especially among the so-called Millennial Generation. Explanations for this break with a near century long driving trends abound: Young adults are rejecting the suburban\, auto-oriented lifestyles favored by their parents; a new greener ethos is motivating young people to move to cities where they travel more by foot\, bike\, and public transit; information and communications technologies have diminished the marginal utility of driving; tougher economic times have kept otherwise willing young drivers out of cars; and so on. This webinar presents the results of a multi-year study of Millennials and travel to explain what is behind the driving declines because the policy implications vary significantly depending on what is really behind these trends. \nSpeakers:\nRobert Puentes\, President and CEO\, Eno Center for Transportation\nEvelyn Blumenberg\, Professor of Urban Planning\, UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs\nBrian D. SUMMARY:Eno Paper Release - Delivering the Goods: Recommendations for Funding a Federal Freight Program
DESCRIPTION:The Eno Center for Transportation invites you to the release of Delivering the Goods: Recommendations for Funding a Federal Freight Program. \nEno’s Freight Working Group:\nBackground\nThe United States currently lacks a comprehensive freight policy\, but over the past several years there has been substantial discussion regarding the need to develop a national program of investment in freight and goods movement. SUMMARY:Eno Member Webinar: Ian Brown\, The Strategy and Economics of London's Major Rail Projects
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a members-only webinar with Ian Brown\, International Rail Consultant.\nTopic:\nThe Strategy and Economics of London’s Major Rail Projects \nWhen:\n10:30am – 11:00am ET\nApril 20\, 2016 \nAbout the Speaker and Presentation:\nIan Brown\, CBE BSc FCILT\nFollowing graduation from Manchester University\, Ian joined the British Railways (BR) two year Graduate Management Training program\, embarking upon a career in railways. \nIn 1984 he was appointed as Inter City Manager for the West Coast Main Line (similar in length and complexity to Amtrak’s North East Corridor) as BR moved from commercial management to full business management including operations and maintenance. \nIan transferred to the Chairman’s new Policy Unit set up to address strategic issues\, in this case how to make freight on Britain’s railways profitable following a year long coal miner’s strike. Coal had dominated rail freight in the UK as elsewhere. For his sins\, Ian was appointed as Managing Director (MD) of Railfreight Distribution to implement the reform strategy focusing on intermodal – Freightliners Ltd\, closing down wagon load operations and introducing freight trains between Britain and the Continent through the Channel Tunnel from 1994. \nBritish Rail was privatised in 1996 and following a brief spell with French Railways (SNCF) Ian was invited to join the Dockland Light Railway in London as CEO with the remit to franchise the operation of the railway and deliver a series of extensions. This eventually led to the DLR becoming the centrepiece of the 2012 Olympic Games\, the first public transport Olympic Games. \nA new transport group – Transport for London (TfL) was set up by the Mayor of London in 2001. Ian joined TfL as MD of London Rail embarking on the assimilation of main line rail services into London’s transport system and\, using a combination of new-build and existing lines\, undertook the East London Line rail project and introduced the London Overground. This was gradually extended to a circular route around London and is an enormous success. As a result the UK government finally had the confidence to give the go ahead to the large Crossrail project. \nIan was awarded a CBE on retirement in the Queen’s New Years Honours List in 2011 for services to Railways and joined the Crossrail Board as a non executive director. \nThe Eno presentation and discussion will examine these London projects\, how they came about\, the politics\, financing and funding models used and how railways became an integral part of London’s economic success story. \nRegister

DESCRIPTION:Transportation options that were once only fantasies are now at our fingertips. Traffic information is available on-demand\, bicycles are commonly shared\, and the prospects for self-driving cars have been increasing. Smart phones have enabled an array of mobility options including the ability to call a personal driver at the click of a button or to crowd-source the best possible route to a given destination. Technological advancements are even on the brink of enabling same-hour delivery service via drones. \nConvergence is poised to bring together the policy-makers\, entrepreneurs\, C-level executives\, solution providers and business thought-leaders that are transforming the landscape of the transportation industry.  These stakeholders will discuss the critical issues affecting technology enabled transit\, the shared economy\, health care delivery\, and traveler information\, among other key topics. Participants will have the opportunity to compare their successes\, challenges\, and new models and discuss their policy implications in a collaborative\, yet focused setting. \nConvergence: noun con•ver•gence kənˈvərjən(t)s the merging of distinct technologies\, industries\, or devices into a unified whole \nConvergence will be much more than a multi-modal transportation summit; Eno is setting the stage for a dynamic day-long event packed with expert-led panels\, one-on-one executive exchanges\, thought-leadership sessions\, case studies from our research and a vision for future policy based upon best practices. Open dialogue will be encouraged throughout the day to maximize idea sharing and ensure productivity.  Participants will not only have the opportunity to learn\, share\, and debate; they will make key industry contacts. \nThe summit’s strategic agenda is designed to maximize efficiency and offer unique insight into present and future challenges facing solutions providers and policy-makers in the transportation industry. We hope you will partner with us as we dissect and address the modern realities that are shaping the very near future of transportation. \n\nLearn more about Eno’s Digital Cities project here \nLearn more about sponsorship opportunities here \n\n\n\n\n8:00 AM- 9:00 AM  \nBreakfast Available\n\n\n9:00 AM- 9:30AM\nWelcome and Presentation  \n\nEmil Frankel\, Interim Eno President and CEO\nComments by Incoming Eno President and CEO\, Rob Puentes\n\nPresentation and summary of Eno’s Digital Cities program\, goals\, and expected outcomes \n\nPaul Lewis\, Vice President of Policy and Finance\, Eno Center\n\nUpdate on USDOT’s Smart Cities Challenge \n\n\nMark Dowd\, Deputy Assistant Secretary\, Office of Research and Technology\, USDOT \n\n\n\n\n\n9:30 AM- 10:45 AM \n(Sessions A & B)\n(Session A) Transit’s Technological Revolution \nThe use of technology is transforming the traditional models of taxis and transit.
