DESCRIPTION:Join the Eno Center for Transportation for the release of “UpRouted: Exploring Microtransit in the United States” at our free annual TRB reception hosted at the Microsoft Innovation & Policy Center. \nMicrotransit is a new concept for transit\, enabled by new technologies that better connect passengers to their ride. Microtransit is a publicly supported service designed to carry multiple passengers on dynamic routes\, and might require passengers to walk to a specified pick-up location. \nUpRouted explores the experiences of three public transportation providers who participated in microtransit pilots across the United States. DESCRIPTION:This September\, the U.S. Department of Transportation and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) released an update to their federal policy statement on automated vehicles (AVs). Automated Driving Systems: A Vision for Safety 2.0 provides voluntary guidance for AV manufacturers as they continue developing the nascent technology. \nOn October 18\, the Eno Center for Transportation will host Nat Beuse\, Associate Administrator for Vehicle Safety Research at NHTSA for a webinar on the newly updated policy statement. DESCRIPTION:Speakers: \nThe Honorable Joe Hockey\, Australian Ambassador to the United States of America\nJennifer Aument\, Group General Manager – North America\, Transurban\nRobert Puentes\, President and CEO\, Eno Center for Transportation \nAmerica’s struggle to build and renew its roads\, airports\, water treatment facilities\, public buildings\, and other infrastructure projects is old news. There is a constant drumbeat of news reports discussing our dilapidated bridges\, inability to raise the federal gas tax\, and the United States’ declining global competitiveness. Solutions and success stories\, however\, are rarely part of the discussion. One important example of a possible way to address some of our infrastructure woes is a strategy known as asset recycling. \nAsset recycling is a system in which governments lease existing infrastructure to private entities. The fees generated from the lease are then used to invest in other infrastructure projects. \nThe most prominent example of where this tool has been used is in Australia. Between 2015 and 2017\, that country’s Asset Recycling Initiative (ARI) helped finalize agreements with its states and territories worth nearly $3billion. These funds are have unlocked over $17 billion in infrastructure spending. \nAt 10am ET on August 29\, 2017\, Eno is honored to host Australian Ambassador Joe Hockey and Jennifer Aument from Transurban for a webinar discussion on asset recycling in Australia and its potential here in the United States. \nRegister \nAbout Ambassador Joe Hockey \nThe Honourable Joe Hockey is Australia’s Ambassador to the United States of America\, taking up his posting in Washington in January 2016. \nMr Hockey has had a long and distinguished career in public service. He first entered Parliament in 1996 as the Member for North Sydney and spent more than seventeen years on the front bench. \nMr Hockey served as a Minister in a number of different portfolios including Financial Services\, Small Business and Tourism\, Human Services and Employment and Workplace Relations. \nIn 2013 Mr Hockey was appointed Treasurer of the Commonwealth and was responsible for all economic policy including fiscal policy. He served as Chair of the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors in 2014 and a member of the leadership troika in 2015. As Treasurer he was a regular delegate to IMF\, World Bank\, Asian Development Bank and APEC meetings. \nPreviously Mr Hockey served as a banking and finance lawyer with a major Australian law firm. He graduated from the University of Sydney with Bachelor degrees in Arts and Law. \nMr Hockey is married to Ms Melissa Babbage\, a company director and former investment banker. Maintaining that level of safety means ensuring that all civil aviation products and articles meet rigorous standards. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) sets these standards and is responsible for overseeing these processes. The high level of safety that the U.S. aviation industry enjoys today is due to the careful and precise certification processes that the FAA maintains. \nHowever\, with rapid pace of change in the aviation industry\, we run the risk of allowing these safety standards to slip\, endangering thousands of lives. Key industry stakeholders have already raised concerns about the efficiency and functionality of the FAA’s certification and approval processes. \nIn order to ensure the continued safety and viability of the U.S. aviation industry reform is needed. The FAA needs to adapt to new technologies while also simultaneously maintaining high standards for safety at a time when government resources are scarce and demand from the industry is high. \nEno’s latest report highlights the issues with the current certification procedures and recommends key policy reforms. DESCRIPTION:On June 8\, 2017 the Eno Center will hold its 25th annual Future Leaders Development Conference Dinner in Washington DC. The dinner is the culmination of Eno’s Future Leaders Development Conference (LDC). The conference gives 20 of the nation’s top graduate students in transportation a first-hand look at how national transportation policies are developed. Students apply to the program early in the year\, and those selected as “Eno Fellows” come to DC for a week of meetings with federal officials and leaders of business and non-profit organizations. \nThis year the Eno Center for Transportation will honor Jane Garvey – former Federal Aviation Administration Administrator and Deputy Administrator of the Federal Highway Administration – with a Lifetime Achievement Award and Robert Prince – former Vice President of AECOM with the Wilbur S. Smith Friend of Eno Award. \nJane Garvey is currently the North American Chairman of Meridiam Infrastructure. She has held a variety of senior positions in both the public and private infrastructure sectors. Most recently\, she served on the Transition Team for President Barack Obama where she focused on transportation policies and related challenges facing the new administration. Prior to that\, Ms. Garvey served as the 14th Administrator of the Federal Aviation Administration and also served as the Acting Administrator and Deputy Administrator of the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). \nRobert Prince is currently with Gannon Consult and is the retired Vice President of Transit at AECOM. Prior to this\, he spent 25 years at the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority starting as a bus operator and working his way up to general manager. He served many years as Chairman of the Conference of Minority Transportation Officials (COMTO). Mr. Prince is a regular figure at Eno’s various leadership courses and events. \nEno is also introducing a new award this year – the Eno Thought Leader Award. In 2016\, Eno created the award to recognize exemplary achievement in the field of transportation research and scholarship. It acknowledges individuals that have a demonstrated body of rigorous\, timely\, and impactful work. The inaugural award will be given to Martin Wachs\, Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Urban Planning at the Luskin School of Public Affairs\, UCLA. \nMartin Wachs spent 25 years teaching at UCLA\, acting as Chairman of the Department of Urban Planning for 11 years. After retirement from the university\, Dr. Wachs became the Director of the Transportation\, Space\, and Technology Program at the RAND Corporation in Santa Monica.
