SUMMARY:Webinar: Retail at Train and Bus Stations: Innovative Strategies to Enhance Revenue\, Amenities\, Ridership\, and Safety
DESCRIPTION:At transit stations\, riders appreciate a wide variety of retail outlets from newsstands to restaurants. However\, the retail landscape is rapidly evolving due to a decline in transit ridership and a shift towards online purchasing. This webinar will show how innovative transit agencies\, property managers\, and developers are adapting to this changing retail climate – with strategies designed to enhance station amenities\, attract more riders\, improve safety\, and increase transit agency revenues. This webinar is jointly sponsored by the Eno Center for Transportation and the American Planning Association’s Transportation Planning Division. \nSpeakers:\nLaura Barr\, Senior Vice President\, CBRE\nCharles Di Maggio\, Chief Executive Officer\, Greystone Management Solutions\nSusan Fine\, Principal\, Fine Development Partners \nModerator:\nPhilip Plotch\, Principal Researcher\, Eno Center for Transportation \nDownload the Slides\nWatch the Recording\n\n\nLaura Barr leads a San Francisco-based team with a passion for the urban public realm and consumer trends\, innovating “retail-as-a-service\,” an approach to leasing and operations now used by top mixed-use developers and operators that demystifies the value creation for retail. As a result\, Laura and her team get involved early on and advise clients on positioning or repositioning major assets and on consumer brand growth strategy. Laura and her team have advised on several landmarks including Ghirardelli Square\, Golden State Warriors’ Chase Center\, Mission Rock with the San Francisco Giants and Tishman Speyer and the widely publicized Springline project in Menlo Park for which the retail activation strategy helped set office rent records in 2022. \nLaura served for six years on CBRE’s Americas Producer Advisory Board as its youngest member and co-chaired the Futures Committee\, which produced research on the impact of autonomous vehicles on real estate. \n  \n\n\nCharles Di Maggio leads Greystone Management Solution’s leasing and asset management teams throughout the United States. Actively involved in real estate\, management\, law and construction in both the public and private sectors for over 35 years\, Mr. Di Maggio provides our clients his broad experience in real estate law\, lease negotiation\, drafting\, retail concession development\, valuation and public sector procurement. \nPrior to joining Greystone\, Mr. Di Maggio was an executive vice president for Grenadier Realty Corp. He has also served as the City of New York’s lead housing and real estate lobbyist in Albany\, the Assistant Commissioner for Local Government Affairs and Contract Management for the Department of Housing Preservation and Development\, and as the Assistant Representative to the Board of Estimate for the Mayor’s Office of the City of New York under the administration of Edward I. Koch. \n\nSusan Fine\, principal of OasesRE and developer of the Turnstyle retail project\, has built in New York City from the ground up (and sometimes below grade)\, coordinating every step of the development process – financing\, leasing\, developing\, construction\, and management. \nMost recently\, she completed a Senior Advanced Leadership Fellowship at Harvard University where she focused on how to use “bricks and clicks” to help micro businesses thrive and lead to wealth creation. She is organizing pilot programs in Massachusetts and Chicago. A summary of these efforts is attached. \nMs. Fine completed the first privately financed project within the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s subway system\, Turnstyle. According to the Wall Street Journal\, “the subterranean marketplace presents a departure from the way the MTA has handled development” and is a model for future privatization. The New York Times complimented “the density\, variety and clarity of the design” calling Turnstyle “a small scale evocation of a busy shopping street.” \n\n

SUMMARY:Webinar: Inclusive Transportation: A Manifesto for Repairing Divided Communities
DESCRIPTION:Transportation planning has often had destructive consequences for underserved communities. Veronica Davis wants to shed light on those inequalities. In her new book\, Inclusive Transportation: A Manifesto for Repairing Divided Communities\, Veronica lays out her vision to bring about a new era of transportation planning. \nDuring this webinar\, Veronica will explain why centering people in transportation decisions requires a great shift in how transit planners and engineers are trained\, how they communicate\, the types of data they collect\, and how they work as professional teams. She’ll define what “equity” means for a transportation project and how it can create something safer\, better\, and more useful for all people. Veronica will conclude with a call to action to transit planners and engineers to reconnect with and help shape communities based on principles of justice and equity. \nSpeakers: \nVeronica Davis\, Director of Transportation & Drainage Operations\, City of Houston \nModerator: \nKirstin Hall\, Senior Manager\, Training & Professional Development

SUMMARY:Webinar: Shifting Gears: Toward a New Way of Thinking about Transportation with Dr. Susan Handy
DESCRIPTION:The transportation system in the U.S. has been shaped by a core set of ideas that are embedded in professional practice. These ideas – freedom\, speed\, mobility\, vehicles\, capacity\, hierarchy\, separation\, control\, and technology – have produced a system in which most people are dependent on driving\, with all the negative consequences that entails. Shifting to a system that offers people choices about their daily travel requires a shift in thinking on the part of the transportation profession. In this talk\, I take a critical look at the way of thinking that\, for the last century\, has shaped our transportation system and consider the ways in which that thinking is – and is not – shifting. \nDownload the Slides:\nWatch the Recording:\n\nSpeaker:  \nSusan Handy\, Distinguished Professor of Environmental Science and Policy Director\, National Center for Sustainable Transportation University of California\, Davis \nModerator: \nAndrea Hamre\, Director of Policy & Research\, Eno Center for Transportation

SUMMARY:Success Factors in Private Contracting for Public Transportation
DESCRIPTION:Service contracting is a tool that public transit agencies can use to deliver transit services for riders. Contracting is widely employed in the United States; nearly two-thirds of transit agencies already contract all or part of their operations. When contracting is implemented effectively and strategically\, it can yield service improvements that benefit the riding public and\, in some cases\, lower costs. It can enable governance overhauls whose impacts may go far beyond increased service reliability by creating more adaptable\, sustainable public institutions. \nTransit agencies are facing unprecedented challenges including lower ridership\, declining revenues\, higher costs\, intense competition\, and workforce management issues. In response\, transit agencies are exploring new and innovative ways to engage with private partners to address these challenges. \nThis webinar will feature public and private stakeholders to discuss success factors for transit service contracting\, given the current context. To read more on this topic\, see Eno’s recent paper on Success Factors in Private Contracting for Public Transportation. \n\n\n\nWatch the recording

SUMMARY:Responding to Policy Changes and Preparing for Reauthorization
DESCRIPTION: \nThe recording of the webinar is posted above. You can see the slides referenced in the webinar here. \nWebinar Overview and Participants: \nAdvocates for pedestrian\, bicycle\, and transit programs have been responding to dramatic policy shifts at the US Department of Transportation this year. The Trump administration has changed regulations and executive orders\, reduced agency staffing levels\, terminated grant programs\, and shifted funding priorities. \nThe American Public Transportation Association\, Transportation for America\, and America Walks have been educating officials at all levels of government about existing programs. They are also helping shape the debate in Congress as it considers reauthorizing the five-year federal transportation law\, which expires in September 2026. \nIn this webinar\, leaders from the three organizations will share their concerns\, strategies\, and hopes regarding federal transportation policies. \nRegister Now \nPanelists: \nWard W. McCarragher \n \nWard McCarragher manages APTA’s lobbying efforts on federal legislative issues that affect the public transit and passenger rail industry on Capitol Hill. In that capacity\, he oversees industry efforts on the federal budget\, the annual appropriations process\, multi-year surface transportation authorization bills\, and security\, tax\, energy and environmental legislation and measures that affect public transit\, commuter\, and intercity passenger rail service\, including high-speed rail. \nBefore joining APTA in 2018\, McCarragher served as Chief Counsel for the U.S. House of Representatives’ Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure for 20 years. In this role\, he was directly involved in negotiating\, drafting\, and supporting each of the public transit and passenger rail titles of surface transportation authorization legislation\, from the Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century (TEA 21) to the Fixing America’s Surface Transportation Act (FAST Act). \nBeth Osborne   \nBeth Osborne is the Interim President and CEO of Smart Growth America. She was previously at the U.S. Department of Transportation\, where she served as the Acting Assistant Secretary for Transportation Policy and the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Transportation Policy beginning in 2009. \nAt USDOT\, Beth managed the TIGER Discretionary Grant program\, the secretary’s livability initiative\, the development of the Obama administration’s surface transportation authorization proposal\, and the implementation of MAP-21. Before joining USDOT\, Beth worked for Sen. Tom Carper (DE) as an advisor for transportation\, trade\, and labor policy\, as the policy director for Smart Growth America and as legislative director for environmental policy at the Southern Governors’ Association. She began her career in Washington\, DC in the House of Representatives working as a legislative assistant for Rep. Ron Klink (PA-04) and as legislative director for Rep. Brian Baird (WA-03). \nMike McGinn   \n \nMike McGinn got his start in local politics as a neighborhood activist pushing for walkability. From there he founded a non-profit focused on sustainable and equitable growth\, and then became mayor of Seattle. Just before joining America Walks\, Mike worked to help Feet First\, Washington State’s walking advocacy organization\, expand their sphere of influence across Washington state. He has worked on numerous public education\, legislative\, ballot measures and election campaigns – which has given him an abiding faith in the power of organizing and volunteers to create change. He is delighted that his role at America Walks allows him to work with so many community leaders and champions across the country.
