SUMMARY:Webinar: Analyzing Bus Ridership Decline
DESCRIPTION:Following six years of consecutive decline\, bus ridership in the United States attained its lowest level ever recorded in history last year. In this webinar\, Dr. Berrebi will explain reasons and potential solutions to this decline through analysis of passenger count data between 2012 and 2018 at 50\,000 bus stops in four cities: Portland\, Miami\, Minneapolis/St. Paul\, and Atlanta. Data show that in all four cities\, neighborhoods with high proportions of white residents lost ridership at the fastest rate. In Miami and Atlanta\, places with high concentrations of college-graduates also correlate with ridership decline. These results suggest that changes in the travel behavior of choice riders may explain the bulk of the decline. Dr. Berrebi will discuss the inelasticity between frequency and ridership and recommend service\, policy\, and infrastructure solutions for transit agencies. \nSpeakers:\nSimon Berrebi\, PhD\, Postdoctoral Fellow at the Georgia Institute of Technology\nAlice Grossman\, PhD\, Senior Policy Analyst\, Eno Center for Transportation \n\nDr. Simon Berrebi is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Georgia Institute of Technology\, where he conducts research on transit ridership. During his Ph.D.\, Simon developed a real-time dispatching method to avoid bus-bunching\, which was implemented on three high-frequency transit routes in Atlanta\, GA\, and San Antonio\, TX. He founded DynamicTime\, and software company helping transit agencies implement dynamic tools to improve operations. Simon is also the founder and past executive director of MARTA Army\, an Atlanta-based non-profit empowering 400 volunteers to improve transit amenities in their own neighborhoods. \nDownload the Slides\nWatch the Recording:

SUMMARY:Webinar: From Yellow to Green: Reducing School Transportation’s Impact on the Environment
DESCRIPTION:The primary goal of every school transportation system is getting students to school safely and on time each day. To do so\, America’s fleet of roughly 480\,000 school buses drives nearly 3.5 billion miles every year. More than half of students also travel to school in personal vehicles\, contributing millions of miles for school transportation. \nSchool transportation is often a necessity for students and families\, but daily trips to and from school have significant environmental effects for students and their communities. All of these vehicles emit millions of tons of greenhouse gases per year into the environment — contributing to global warming — and expose children to harmful pollutants that can affect their health and academic performance. \nIn a new policy brief\, “From Yellow to Green: Reducing School Transportation’s Impact on the Environment\,” Bellwether Education Partners analyzed how school transportation affects the environment and what steps states and districts can take to provide more environmentally friendly transportation services. This webinar\, hosted by the brief’s co-author Phillip Burgoyne-Allen\, will provide an overview of the school transportation policy landscape\, school transportation’s environmental impact\, and the costs and benefits of a number of impact reduction strategies. \nSpeakers:\nBrianne Eby\, Policy Analyst\, Eno Center for Transportation\nPhillip Burgoyne-Allen\, Policy Analyst\, Bellwether Education Partners \nMissed the Webinar? Watch the recording here:\n \nPowerpoint Slides from Webinar\n\n \nPhillip Burgoyne-Allen is a policy analyst at Bellwether Education Partners\, a national nonprofit focused on dramatically changing education and life outcomes for underserved children. He has written for WIRED on electric school bus pilot programs. In addition to “From Yellow to Green\,” Phillip and the Bellwether team have produced several other resources on school transportation\, including “Intersection Ahead: School Transportation\, School Integration\, and School Choice\,” “School Crossing: Student Transportation Safety on the Bus and Beyond\,” and “The Challenges and Opportunities in School Transportation Today” in 2019\, as well as “Miles to Go: Bringing School Transportation into the 21st Century” and “Better Buses: Three Ways to Improve School Transportation\, in Under 3 Minutes” in 2017. SUMMARY:Webinar: "Part 1: Microtransit 2.0" - From Pilot to Transit System Integration
DESCRIPTION:Scaling up microtransit operations (a.k.a. on-demand transit and general public demand-response transit) from a pilot project to a program introduces new opportunities and challenges for transit system integration. Gwinnett County\, in the Atlanta Metro\, has designed a multi-phase microtransit expansion from 2019 through 2024 that reaches new areas geographically\, increases integration with ADA complementary paratransit service\, and facilitates more connectivity with fixed route service. This structured approach has been developed to leverage critical lessons from the pilot project to inform a longer-term and more seamless program\, both operationally and from the passenger perspective. Other aspects of integration\, such as fare payment and National Transit Database reporting\, have been incorporated. This webinar\, with the consultant supporting Gwinnett County’s approach\, will discuss post-pilot activity for microtransit\, specifically the integration of microtransit into the family of services a transit agency provides. \nSpeaker:\nJanae Futrell\, AICP\, LEED AP\, Founder and Manager\, Civic Sphere \nJanae’s work with Civic Sphere\, a Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE)\, focuses on leveraging technology for mobility and public transit. Projects range from building data platforms to inform daily operational decisions to applying key methods and technologies for improved transit service and successful change navigation. Prior to starting Civic Sphere\, she worked with the City of Atlanta as Senior Program Manager for Smart Cities and the Atlanta Regional Commission overseeing work programs for the Regional Transit Committee and Human Services Transportation\, which integrates disability\, aging\, and low income needs. \n\nWatch the Recording:

SUMMARY:Webinar: Beyond Speculation 2.0
DESCRIPTION:Watch the recording:\n\nAutomated vehicles (AVs) could completely transform mobility networks\, dramatically improve safety\, reduce emissions\, and provide access and mobility to underserved parts of society. The proliferation of AVs could also lead to more suburban sprawl\, congestion\, greenhouse gas emissions\, and higher costs. Putting the right public policy in place now will help ensure that the transportation system of the future is safer\, equitable\, and more efficient. The goal of federal- and state-level governments should be to ensure public safety\, to provide a consistent framework for developers\, and to create an environment where rules can adapt to unknown future outcomes.  Join the Eno Center for Transportation for a webinar on our report\, “Beyond Speculation 2.0: Automated vehicles and Public Policy\,” where we’ll review the current state of development for AVs and discuss recommendations for responsibly testing AVs on public roads. \nSpeakers\nAlice Grossman\, PhD\, Senior Policy Analyst\, Eno Center for Transportation\nPaul Lewis\, Vice President\, Policy and Finance\, Eno Center for Transportation

SUMMARY:Miles to Go: Bringing School Transportation into the 21st Century
DESCRIPTION:Every day\, nearly 25 million students travel to school in an instantly recognizable yellow bus. Since these vehicles drove onto the scene decades ago\, almost nothing has changed about them or the school systems that use them to transport students. \nWhile the school bus is the safest vehicle on the road\, these days many school districts are struggling to provide efficient and adequate service because of rising costs\, stagnant funding\, and increasingly complex regulations. \nIn a recent report\, Bellwether Education Partners analyzed school transportation on a national scale to determine how schools can improve their transportation systems while maintaining their impeccable safety record. This webinar\, hosted by report co-author Jennifer O’Neal Schiess\, will focus on the planning\, efficiency\, and regulation of school transportation. \nSpeakers:\nRobert Puentes\, President and CEO\, Eno Center for Transportation\nJennifer O’Neal Schiess\, Principal\, Bellwether Education Partners
